With green eyes and pale freckled skin, he has red hair and beard (both worn braided), of which he is very proud. Any uncomplimentary remark about his hair colour is met with hostility, since he is literally a red-headed step-child. Although not as stupid as expected by most civilized people, he is very rash and gullible, sprinkling powdered ginger into his ale to "preserve the ginger"; he believes that it helps to maintain his hair colour. When most of his clan was massacred by an orc ambush, the survivors were sheltered by a nearby dwarven city, where they settled. His widowed mother remarried one of the civilized residents. Since red hair is rare among dwarves, but the norm in his clan, there was some tension among the groups. As a result, there was little cultural exchange. Granite can write single letters, but not whole words in Common or Dwarvish, and can occasionally recognize entire words that someone else has written. Because of his history, he has an unusually strong hatred of orcs, and has difficulty controlling it.

Uncouth, yet loyal, his favourite activities include hunting, drinking, and eating - especially wild foods. Naturally, he also loves fighting, charging into battle crying "Granite smash!", brandishing his war hammer.
